Why this recipe works versus just freezing Simply Delish Jel

Freezing regular Jel is possible, but it doesn’t always yield the best results, especially if you are looking to use sugar free jel like I have here.

When you freeze regular Jello, the water inside forms edible crystals of ice which is fun to eat but are missing the flavor.

Using my recipe for a frozen jel pop versus regular frozen Jell-O will offer a more fluid popsicle rather than frozen water surrounded by jel.

Jello is made from gelatin; a substance derived from collagen and needs boiling water to dissolve.

The keto jel that I use is my Simply Delish and uses gums instead, so it is dairy free and vegan and begins with cold water to dissolve.

I modify the regular Simply Delish recipe with allulose sweetener to create a smoother, slushie-like consistency that stays enjoyable even when frozen.

Even after sitting in the freezer overnight, you can still squeeze it like a soft ice and it is not rock hard.

The allulose allows it to not completely harden but remain partially frozen.

This is one of my favorite ways to make a big batch of frozen pops for any party, especially for the Fourth of July!

Push-up popsicles, or what some may know as Otter pops, are a fantastic way to enjoy frozen Jel. These frozen desserts are fun, portable, and perfect for kids. You can find push-up sleeves on Amazon, which come with a zip top and a collapsible silicone funnel for easy filling.

Tips, Substitutions and FAQs

  • Pour the prepared solution into ice cube trays and freeze for Jell-O melts. Use the colors of the jel to create colorful festive punch with the frozen cubes of jel dessert. Raspberry flavors of jel dessert pair well with lemonade.
  • Try layering different colors of jel in plastic cups so the colors show through. It becomes a slushie in a cup when served with a spoon.
  • Substitute in some vodka or tequila for a booze-infused Jell-O dessert for adults. The alcohol will also help maintain the slushiness of the jel. Make them into Jell-O shots in small dixie cups or create frozen Jello shots without cups but freeze in an ice cube tray with toothpicks. Use nonstick spray if your molds are not made of silicone for easy removal.
  • You can make a large party sized frozen jel dessert when you pour the solution into a rectangular container, sheet pan or Jell-O mold. Coat it with a little non-stick spray before pouring, then freeze. To serve up, simply use an ice cream scoop to scoop it out and serve.

Can you freeze regular Jello? Yes, you can freeze regular Jello, but it tends to separate and lose its texture when thawed. Using my modified recipe using sugar-free Jello mix and allulose can yield better results.

How long do frozen Jel popsicles last in the freezer? Frozen Jello popsicles can last up to 2-3 months in the freezer when stored in an airtight container or well-sealed push-up sleeves.

How do I prevent Jel popsicles from becoming too hard if I do not have allulose?  Adding fruit juice or Cool Whip can help maintain a softer, slushie-like texture without the need for allulose. Do not substitute the allulose with erythritol or monk fruit or it will become extremely hard after frozen.

Can I make these popsicles with alcohol for adult parties? Yes, you can make booze-infused Jell-o popsicles by adding a small amount of alcohol to the mixture. Be cautious with the alcohol content, as too much can prevent the Jello from setting properly. Do not use any more than 1/4 cup substituted for the water step.

What type of molds work best for Jel popsicles? Silicone molds or plastic popsicle molds with sticks work best. Push-up sleeves are also a great option for fun and portable treats without much of a mess, especially for kids.

Can I make layered frozen jel popsicles?  Yes, you can make layered popsicles by allowing each layer to partially set in the freezer before adding the next layer. Raspberry, blue raspberry and lemon make a great copycat of a bomb pop synonymous with 4th of July parties!

Freezing Jello opens up a world of fun and delicious possibilities when you modify the original jello recipe.

Creating slushie-like popsicles that are perfect for your next summer party that is sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike.

Enjoying Jello treats has come a long way from the original wiggly treat to a slushie treat with bright colors and delicious flavor combinations.
