Let’s make this delicious Apple Sauce Bread

Start out by preheating your oven to 375F and lining your bread pan with parchment paper.

Set aside.

In a large bowl with a whisk, mix together the coconut oil or butter with the granulated sweetener you chose.

Make sure the coconut oil is at room temperature and not melted coconut oil to help keep the batter stable.

You can of course use an electric mixer, but it is less cleanup to just whisk in the bowl.

Whisking by hand also helps you to not overmix the batter which can result in your bread falling upon cooling.

If it is your first time trying this recipe, go with the whisking by hand method.

Now you will add the rest of the liquid ingredients and mix well after each.

Starting with vanilla extract, then eggs, unsweetened applesauce and finally the nut butter you chose.

Mix all of the batter of wet ingredients well before continuing.

Since we are using a nut butter in this recipe instead of the many nut flours you can choose from like almond flour or hazelnut flour, it gives it all the moisture and reduces the bread from falling apart.

Now add in the dry ingredients: coconut flour, ground spices, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

There is no need to mix them together in a separate bowl, just dump them in.

Mix the batter well until smooth.

It should look like this.

Now get your prepared pan from earlier and pour batter into it evenly.

Gently smooth the top of the batter then sprinkle on the nuts if you are using.

Bake in your 375F preheated oven for 50-60 minutes.

Check it at the 50 minute mark as all oven vary.

Toothpick tested clean in the center at an angle tell you it is done.

Move the bread that is still in the pan to a wire rack.

Let the bread cool in the pan for 30 minutes before lifting up the parchment paper to place directly on the cooling rack.

With a serrated knife, gently and slowly cut your first few pieces.

I recommend only cutting what you want to consume at the time so it stays fresher longer.

You must keep the leftover bread in an airtight container in the fridge as it will spoil quickly at room temperature.

You can freeze individual slices when you place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for 1 hour.

After the one hour, wrap each piece in plastic wrap then place in a large zip top freezer bag up to 3 months.

To enjoy, simply let it thaw for 10 minutes at room temperature.

Nutritional information is for 1/10th of the loaf.

One slice has 8.1 g carbs, 1.3 g fiber, and 4.8 g protein and 6.6 g saturated fat if you use coconut oil.

Tips, Substitutions, FAQs

  • You can easily turn this into a pumpkin bread when you substitute pumpkin puree for the applesauce!
  • If you want to give this bread a richer flavor, substitute the granulated amount of sugar called for with keto dark brown sugar.
  • Replace the nut topping asked for with a sprinkling of some keto brown sugar for a crunchy topping.
  • Make sure you only substitute the coconut oil or butter with something in the same consistency. Do not use a oil that is runny at room temperature like vegetable oil, avocado oil or olive oil.
  • Although it is not a low carb option, you can use very ripe bananas with brown spots, mashed, for the applesauce to create a healthy banana bread recipe.
  • Turn this into a healthy zucchini bread when you replace the applesauce with shredded and squeezed dry zucchini shreds.
  • This Easy Keto Applesauce Bread is amazing when you toast it in the oven or toaster oven and enjoy with a glass of almond milk or soy milk.
  • One of the best ways to enjoy a slice for breakfast is when you top it with a dollop of greek yogurt as well for a delightful breakfast treat!
  • Make muffins when you divide the batter among 12 muffin cups or 24 mini muffins as pictured.

Can I Use Regular Applesauce Instead of Unsweetened?

Yes, you technically can, but I would not recommend it as the less sugar you have in a recipe, the less brown it will become in the oven. With the nut butter, this recipe gets brown enough. Regular applesauce often contains added sugars, which we want to avoid in this keto-friendly recipe.

-Can I Substitute Almond Flour with Coconut Flour?

No, it is not interchangeable. Coconut flour requires a specific amount of liquid ingredients and that has already been calibrated in theis recipe. It would turn into a crumbly mess if you would substitute it.

Is the bread super sweet?

No, it is only subtly sweet with a great flavor with the spices used. If you prefer your bread less sweet, you can reduce the amount of sweetener only by a few tablespoons as it helps hold the bread ingredients together.

Sugar free chocolate chips in a tin

Can I Add Nuts, Apple chunks or Chocolate Chips into the bread instead of on top?

Absolutely! Chopped nuts, apple chunks or dark chocolate chips can be a delightful addition to your Keto Applesauce Bread. Make sure you toss them in a little coconut flour before folding them into the batter.

Can I Make Mini Loaves Instead of One Large Bread?

Certainly! You can divide the batter into mini loaf pans and adjust the baking time accordingly. Mini loaves can be a great way to control portion sizes and also is great for gift giving.

How Do I Store the Bread?

To keep your Keto Applesauce Bread fresh, store it in an airtight container or wrap it in plastic wrap. It can be stored at room temperature for a few days or in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.

-Can I Freeze Individual Slices?

Yes, you can freeze individual slices of the bread for future enjoyment. First you need to freeze on a baking sheet in a single layer. This is the only thing that will keep your bread in individual slices versus a big blob. Then wrap them in plastic wrap or parchment paper and store them in an airtight container in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat, simply thaw and enjoy.

Can I mix all of the batter up in a food processor?

Yes, you can. Follow the instructions on when to mix what with what and it will turn out.

-Can I substitute the erythritol with another sweetener?

As long as the one you choose is granulated versus liquid. Coconut sugar would work fine. Pure maple syrup will not work here as it will add too much moisture and the middle will sink and be a gooey mess.

-Would homemade applesauce work in this recipe?

Yes, it will work. Try to drain off any extra liquid that forms from homemade appleasuce by simmering it longer. You want a thicker appleasauce so you do not add any extra moisture to the already very moist batter. It will sink in the middle and be gooey if you do.

Can I sub in a flax egg or two for the eggs called for?

Flax eggs are not as stable as regular eggs so it would not be a good substitute. You can of course experiment with egg replacer like Bobs Red Mill egg replacer. I have not tried it though so I have no idea on the results.

With the natural sweetness of unsweetened applesauce, the richness of nut butter, and the warmth of cinnamon, it’s one of those healthy recipes to enjoy any time of the year.

Whether you’re new to baking or a seasoned pro, this easy sweet bread recipe is sure to become one of your favorite quick bread recipes.

Experiment with different add-ins like fresh apples, nuts, and chocolate chips to add variety to this great recipe next time.

      1. Did you mean a quarter cup of Stevia instead of a quarter tsp? Would erythritol or allulose work? If so, how much?

      2. Stevia is 100x stronger than sugar so 1/4 tsp is all you need. Monkfruit or allulose would be used like sugar though. You could use allulose or erythritol but it would take a lot more to get the sweetening power.

      1. Oh my,so sorry about that! It should be mixed in before the dry ingredients. I have added the instruction to the recipe. Thank you for pointing that out! I would love to hear how the recipe turns out for you😊 Thanks for visiting my site!

  1. The recipe was delicious!
I was concerned that there were so few “dry ingredients” but it set up well and had a very nice consistency.
Great way to use up leftover applesauce!
