4 Ingredient Cocoa Powder Chocolate Mousse Recipe

Don’t let the thought of making chocolate mousse intimidate you anymore when you whip this dreamy 4 Ingredient Cocoa Powder Chocolate Mousse Recipe up in no time!

When you are needing a creamy, chocolate fix, reach for this easy recipe!

This 4 ingredient chocolate mousse recipe is the best of all chocolate desserts as it is a decadent quick treat!

It truly is one of my favorite desserts made with simple ingredients that will surely satisfy a sweet tooth.

Even if its your first time making mousse, you will still be impressed with how easy this fool proof recipe is.

You do not need egg yolks, egg whites or gelatin like you do in traditional mousse recipes as this is an eggless chocolate mousse.

No cooking is required either as this homemade version uses cocoa powder rather than melted chocolate.

The unsweetened cocoa powder really delivers the dark chocolate flavor that chocolate lovers will recognize a mile away!

It is like chocolate pudding but with a stiffer consistency and an airy texture rather than heavy and creamy.

Keep reading as I show you how to make the mousse plus a tips section, substitution ideas, and answers to frequently asked questions about this delicious chocolate mousse recipe.

Here is what you will need to make this easy chocolate mousse recipe!

Let’s make this quick chocolate mousse!

First get out a large mixing bowl and an electric mixer whether a stand mixer or a hand mixer with a whisk attachment.

If you have remembered to plan ahead, put your beater and bowl into the freezer for a few minutes.

This allows the cream to fluff up more and not be warmed up as much as it mixes.

You will need to make sure your mascarpone cheese is at room temperature for the best results to ensure you are able to whip it up well.

If you forget to set it out, you can easily put a STILL SEALED container into a bowl of hot water for 5 minutes.

Do not leave it for long or it may separate.

Put the mascarpone cheese in your bowl and mix at medium speed until it is fluffy and smooth with a creamy texture.

Now you will add in your unsweetened natural cocoa powder and heavy cream.

It is best to add the cocoa powder to the bowl through a strainer.

Either pre-sift it, or just measure and add it through a strainer to prevent clumps.

Start out on a low speed and let it get mixed together, so the regular cream doesn’t splash out of the bowl.

Once the cocoa powder is wettened, turn it up to high speed and mix for 2-3 minutes until you get stiff peaks!

You want to make sure to not mix it too long or it will start to separate which will ruin the creaminess you want in the final product!

Now you can put it into small bowls or serving dishes using an ice cream scoop or get fancy like I did and pipe it into the dessert dishes like this!

If you are going to serve it later, make sure you put it in a medium bowl, preferably glass so you can cover it with plastic wrap.

Alternately, make sure you keep it in an airtight container up to 4 days before it will not be as good.

Tips, Substitutions, and FAQs

Can I make this a Vegan Chocolate Mousse?

Yes! Just use dairy free cream cheese like Kite Hill, and then for the cream part, just fold in some dairy free cool whip after you have mixed the cocoa in.

I recommend mixing it just for a minute and then getting out of the mixer. It may break down if you mix it too long! You could also make your own dairy free whipped cream with my recipe and fold that in.

What if I don’t have a hand mixer, can I use something else?

If you do not have a mixer, try this recipe in your food processor. Just make sure to scrape down the bowl often and stop processing once you reach medium peaks.

Is there another sweetener I can use other than stevia if I want?

You can use sugar free powdered sugar instead of stevia if you wish. You will need to add in a little heavy cream to thin it out as the powdered sweetener absorbs moisture.

Combine sugar free sweetener with the whipped cream instead of adding to the recipe with the mascarpone. This will help stabilize the whipped cream and not make it too dry.

The other dry ingredients of cocoa powder will mix up well as listed in the recipe.

Is there a substitute for mascarpone cheese if I cannot find any?

Yes! Use cream cheese that has been brought to room temperature. Using cream cheese instead of mascarpone cheese will make it a little less rich.

Mascarpone cheese is creamier and does contain a higher fat content to create the fluffy texture you are wanting so if you can find it, I recommend using it.

Would this chocolate mousse work as a chocolate mousse pie?

Turn it into a chocolate mousse pie when you use the chocolate mixture as a pie filling! It is the perfect no bake dessert that you can make easy! Just use the crust from my No Bake Cannoli Pie Recipe and fill it.

Spread evenly and chill overnight. It’s a good idea to top with fresh whipped cream to adorn the top before serving versus putting it on before.
