Tips, Substitutions and FAQs

  • Make a pizza bar when you create a plateful of pizza chaffle crusts and set up toppings so everyone can top their own mini pizza. Add each topping to a small bowl then arrange on the counter buffet style. My kids have so much fun doing this, and it helps to get them to eat better!
  • If you do not have a blender or food processor you can mix up the ingredients for the chaffle crusts in a large mixing bowl. You may find that the shreds of mozzarella show more than in my recipe where I blend it smooth. It will still work though.
  • Make sure your waffle iron is nice and hot before pouring the batter in so you get a nice crispy outside.
  • Do not lift the waffle iron lid too soon or the batter may stick. It is important to wait until the steam subsides then lift the top to check.
  • If you are using a small dash waffle maker, put a piece of parchment paper or a baking sheet under the unit as it may run out of the maker.

Can I use egg whites instead of whole eggs in the recipe for the pizza chaffles? Yes, you can substitute 3 large egg whites for 1 large egg. In the case of my recipe, you would need 6 egg whites to substitute for the 2 whole eggs called for.

Can I bake my keto pizza chaffles directly on the oven rack? I would only bake directly on the oven rack if it was covered with a piece of aluminum foil. The sauce tends to seep through the waffle holes and may make a huge mess in your oven. This way of cooking on the foil which is directly on the rack allows you to be able to slide the chaffles onto a pan when done.

Are other cheeses able to be used in the chaffle recipe and for topping the pizzas? While mozzarella cheese is commonly used for its mild flavor and melting properties, you can experiment with different types of cheeses to create different flavors. Cheddar, provolone, and Monterey Jack are all delicious options for chaffle crusts and for topping them. I would recommend blending the cheese with the mozzarella. Since it only calls for 1/4 cup mozzarella in the chaffle recipe, it is easy to substitute. Using other cheeses in the topping of the pizza may be too oily and not melt as well as mozzarella.

What is a chaffle, and why is it one of the favorite foods among keto dieters? A chaffle is a low-carb waffle made primarily from cheese and eggs, often used as a substitute for traditional bread or pizza crusts in ketogenic diets. It’s popular among keto dieters due to its versatility to create many different recipes just by changing the cheese used and all of the additions the low carb world has.

Can I use coconut flour instead of almond flour for the chaffle batter? While almond flour is commonly used in chaffle recipes for its texture and flavor, you can substitute coconut flour if preferred. Keep in mind that coconut flour absorbs more moisture than almond flour, so you may need to add in an additional egg or two to make it thin enough to pour into the waffle maker.

What is the nutritional information for gluten-free keto pizza chaffles? The nutritional information for chaffle pizzas provided is only for the pizza chaffle itself. You will have to figure in the carb counts of the toppings you use to get the precise macro calculations. The pizza crust chaffle as written contains 3.2 g net carbs. You can reduce that down to almost nothing if you add in a little extra mozzarella cheese instead of the almond flour.

Can I make chaffle pizzas in an air fryer instead of baking them in the oven? Yes! Chaffle pizzas can be cooked in an air fryer for a quick and crispy result. Simply place the topped chaffles in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook at 400°F for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Can I make larger chaffles instead of mini ones? Absolutely! While mini chaffles are perfect for individual servings or appetizers, you can also make larger chaffles using a regular-sized waffle maker. Simply double the recipe to increase the amount of batter used and cook them for slightly longer until golden brown and crispy.

Would this idea work to make pizza bagels? Yes, the ever-popular pizza-on-a-bagel snack can be recreated in a gluten free and low carb way when you use my Keto Gluten Free Bagel Recipe as the crust for your pizza. Follow the rest of the instructions as listed.

Gluten-Free Keto Mini Pizza Chaffles offer a delicious and satisfying alternative to traditional pizza crusts, providing all the flavor and texture of a classic pizza without the added carbs.

When you blend together simple ingredients such as cheese, almond flour, and Italian seasoning, it creates a flavorful chaffle crust that is the perfect canvas for your favorite pizza toppings. Whether enjoyed hot out of the oven or stored for later, chaffle pizzas are a versatile and convenient option for low-carb lunches, quick weeknight dinners, or satisfying snacks on the go.
